The Crown King Historical Society hosted the 9th Annual Apple Festival on Sat Oct 18th. Discount Tire Company was the corporate sponsor of the 2014 Apple Festival. Discount Tire Co generously donated to the CK Historical Society for the second year in a row, helping to make this year’s event a huge success. The Apple Festival is as old fashioned street fair that includes the entire town. The CKHS, The CK School, The Crown King Fire Dept and the local businesses join forces to make the event affordable and memorable.
The event began at 6:30 with apple pancake breakfast at Doozy’s Bakery inside the Prospector Mall. At 10 am the fun began as the children received their goodie bags with a wristband, treats and a treasure map. The apple festival provides a free hayride to all the events around town. Guests were treated to a hayride to the Bear Creek Cabins where the children picked and decorated pumpkins and enjoyed a bouncy house. The General Store melted their famous fudge for kids to dip & decorate their apples. Guests were invited to tour the Free Historical Museum. The General Store’s Rocky Road Sweet Stop awarded free ice cream cones to lucky winners throughout the day! Local cabin owner, Sue Carneal, demonstrated her skills on a spinning wheel for curious children on the side patio (adults loved her too!).
Adriane McSpadden, the teacher at the 1917 One-Room Crown King School shared history of the school & the town with the children. The schoolhouse tour was a favorite for many of the children and their parents. Ms McSpadden shared videos of times gone past, giving everyone a feel of what it was like to live and travel in the early 1900’s.
Singer, Denise Roggio, from Yarnell, Az, provided entertainment throughout the afternoon at the CK Saloon. Several vendors were selling their wares along Main Street while guests bid on silent auction items at the Saloon. Kids and adults enjoyed trying their luck at gold panning at at the Prospector Mall. There was also apple bobbing and apple products for sale at the Guest Ranch. Our streets were alive with a fun festival atmosphere. The apple festival ended with a shoot out on Main Street in front of the Saloon. The good guys won in case you missed it!
Many thanks to Tammy Sidles & CKHS President,Margaret Henninsen, for organizing this year’s event. A big Thank You to Chuck Bolle for driving the hayride all day with the patience of a saint! The CKHS is actively preserving the rich history of Crown King and the Southern Bradshaw Mountain. If you would like to contact the CK Historical Society, please email them at [email protected]
